Vinita Public Schools Welcomes Alumnus Garret Maxey as Head Boys Basketball Coach

VINITA, OKThe Vinita Board of Education is proud to announce the hiring of Mr. Garret Maxey as Head Boys Basketball Coach. A Vinita alumnus and former VPS teacher, Maxey returns home to succeed Coach Tony Roach following his legendary career leading the Hornets.

“I am honored to serve the district that has played such a significant role in my life,” said Coach Garret Maxey. “Our program will be defined by discipline, durability, and a commitment to the TEAM. It’s time to get to work.”

“In our search, we looked for a leader who could connect with our students’ hearts while holding them to a championship standard,” noted VHS Principal Melissa Williams. “Garret makes decisions based on what is best for the student, modeling the exact integrity our young men need to see every day.”

Athletic Director John Treat added, “Coach Maxey is ready to go on day one. He understands that success is built in the summer and the weight room, and his energy is exactly what our department needs.”

“On a personal note, Garret is coming home,” said Superintendent Gabriel Schmidt. “He and his family are deeply embedded in the fabric of Vinita. We are confident he has the heart and values to honor Coach Roach’s incredible legacy while carving a new path forward for our student-athletes.”

A graduate of OSU and the TU College of Law, Maxey is stepping away from his legal practice to dedicate his complete focus to our Hornet community.
