Vinita Public Schools Names Jacob Tanner Head Football Coach
VINITA, OK – [10/28/2025] – Vinita Public Schools (VPS) is proud to officially confirm Jacob Tanner as the Head Football Coach for the Vinita Hornets. Coach Tanner successfully led the program on an interim basis, making significant and recognizable strides in developing the team's climate and culture both on and off the field.
The school district recognizes the cultural progress demonstrated by the team this season. Under Coach Tanner and his dedicated staff, the program has shown marked improvement in key areas: accountability, sportsmanship, and consistent effort.
"Coach Tanner and his staff have been instrumental in building a strong culture focused on team building and having each other's back," said Melissa Williams, Principal of Vinita High School. "Our young men are facing adversity head-on, continuing to move forward, and representing our school with the kind of sportsmanship and character that Vinita High School values. That is the true measure of progress."
John Treat, Athletic Director, praised the foundation being built. "After seeing the work and effort put into the season by Coach Tanner and his staff, this is a well-earned opportunity. We saw a noticeable shift in how these athletes carry themselves. There's a new level of accountability being demonstrated every day, whether in the classroom or on the field. Confirming Coach Tanner as Head Coach ensures this momentum and consistency continues into the future."
Gabe Schmidt, Superintendent of Vinita Public Schools, affirmed the decision, noting the positive impact on the entire district. "We are committed to providing stability and long-term leadership for all our programs. Coach Tanner's core values are consistent with Vinita's, and we fundamentally look for improvement. His ability to take our young men where they are and grow them is the vision we like to see, and we are excited to have him as the permanent leader of the Hornet Football program."
Come see Coach Tanner and his staff as the Hornets will be in action this Friday night at home with a 7:00 PM kickoff. They will continue their work to build a strong, successful, and representative program for the Vinita community.
