Many
students find history dull, so I try to make my lessons interesting.
My students complete hands-on projects like PowerPoint presentations,
graphical timelines, and informational cartoons. Because students live in a world
where they are constantly engaged and entertained, I think that school
lessons should also be engaging.
This
year I’ve become more involved in academic competitions. Three
years ago I began encouraging students to participate in History Day --
a national competition for which students prepare museum-like exhibits
on a historic subject. This year I required all of my students to
compete in History Day. Three students placed at the district
competition and went on to the state level. I also coached a new *Mock
Trial* team this year, which was a great success. Our team’s
record, including the scrimmage, was 4 and 1. The team that beat us
went on to place in the top 10 for the state. This year's Mock Trial
team deserves major recognition!
Teaching
history is only part of my life. I have 3 young children, of which 2
are toddlers. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband for 13
years. We live 4 miles west of Adair and I drive about an hour a day. I
adore my family and I am completely devoted to them. I want students to
know this because I want them to see that it is possible to achieve
your dreams even when you have family responsibilities. I could come up with a
dozen excuses every week that would keep me from doing my job. Instead
I live by this motto: "Give 100% of yourself to the task you
are doing at the moment." So, I give my all to my family while
I’m home and I give my all to teaching while I'm at school, and I
enjoy every minute of both.
